Time is beside herself. Dead bodies are multiplying in Xanadu and the surrounding loco-weed filled mountains. The squirrel population has become hook-nosed and rabid. Fertility gods are reluctant to mate. Some sort of Time Warp is interfering with all her plans. And worst of all, her only supplier for the Sacred Brine Shrimp so key to all godly technologies (and addictions) has run mad and can no longer supply them.
So when the goddess finds the naïve but well-meaning Cybele through a cosmic computer glitch, she is desperate enough to snatch the girl into the Akashic Records. There, an appalled Cybele is equipped with special cameras and a crew of ghosts, told to re-arrange certain life sequences for different outcomes, and to film her efforts to prevent future rewrites. She is to give the head fertility god an attitude adjustment and then repair the time warp – she is to save the world.

I read all the reviews, but the strongly negative one gave me pause. I downloaded to my Kindle anyway, and ten pages later, I was hooked. Having finished and thoroughly enjoyed A Chip in Time, I understand the negative reviewer's complaint: the ability to recognize irony in all its forms, and therefore the ability to enjoy satire and parody, is congenital. If you can't see or appreciate parody, you will find this book a waste of your time.On the other hand, if you have a well-rounded sense of humor and have read a trashy romance, sci-fi, or fantasy novel or two, well, download and hang-on!

J.K. Mikals has produced an engaging, genre-defying tale that gently mocks literary cliches and whole-heartedly celebrates snack foods. In Mikals' reality, the heroine's search for true love and the Goddess of Time's addiction to ambrosia intersect, with surprising results for the history of the world. Mikals' approach to social satire is playful and amusing, and I found her brand names particularly funny.
"A Chip in Time" explores the profundities and absurdities of love, time, technology, and culture, but Mikals never pontificates, and she never loses the plot. Mikals can be forgiven for the odd obscure reference, and those of you who are really up on your heresies and fertility cults can relish the opportunity to enjoy an in-joke or two with the author while the rest of us google it.
Both a parody of genre fiction and serious entertainment, Mikals' A Chip in Time suggests a more ambitious version of the children's classic, The Princess Bride. For those unfamiliar, The Princess Bride satirizes the fairy tale to keep a jaded adult reader as rapt as a young listener. Mikals' novel also pokes fun at its antecedents and its characters, earning license to blend in at least three distinct genres (romance, sci-fi, fantasy). Lest I should misdirect anyone, I should stress that this book is written for an adult, female audience. To my utter surprise, I found it a real page-turner. And I am male. Enjoy.
At last, something memorable and unique in a world full of teen vampire redemption romances! As a former reviewer said (and I agree) this is indeed a Princess Bride-like story for adults. Definitely worth buying & reading. If for some reason you get stuck, I encourge you to read it through; hopefully you will enjoy it as I have.
I just decided to delete this one from my . I worked my way three quarters through until I called it quits. I did not find it an entertaining read I found it boring and pointless. The constant flashbacks and interruptions to the story were annoying; the characters were flat; the plot -still more than halfway through- not clear to me. Admittedly, the later may be due to me skimming forward endlessly in the hopes of finding something HAPPENING besides bland descriptions of situations or meaningless dialogues. The characters -I am sorry - but what is the POINT? Where was this going? A chick -and I usually do not describe any women like that- the chick destined by the goddess of time to safe the world ... intended to hook up with a god of fertility. So WHY oh WHY is she flirting with guy B, hooking up with guy C, shagging guy D and arranging the timelines so that she has not even met guy A when I called it quits???
In short a tedious boring read -what a waste of time. I seriously cannot by any means comprehend how someone was able to truly and honestly enjoy this when there are so many more entertaining light reads out there.
I was so glad I did not have to pay for this one.
Wow. Intrigued by the author video, I decided to give this book a half hour of my time, to see if it was worth reading all 200 pages. By 10 minutes, I was hooked. This is a great story! Believe me, girls, you will have a good time ...as for the male readership, well, you'll have to be broad-minded (JK Mikals would know what to do with THAT pun) Anyway, I highly recommend this book. For a story peopled by ancient gods, it's a real page-turner. Among other things, it imagines what happens when a genteel all-American girl gets mixed up with some lusty cosmic dieties- Aristophanes meets Joseph Heller. It's laugh-out-loud funny but has serious insights. The poet Marianne Moore once described a poem as an "imaginary garden with real toads in it." Ms Mikals has given us an imaginary garden with real truths in it. To sum up, I liked it a lot, I had a good time reading it, and I am going to recommend it to my friends

As the last reviewer said, it's a humorous take on the whole silly romance genre, tossed in with a generous dollop of mythological in-humor and a shaker of non-linear narrative. If one were to take it seriously, it would be a complete shame. It's silly beyond belief, and I found myself laughing along with the author (who clearly had fun writing this).
